Where to get Chains

Find your first Chains in a small chest in the prison area, then craft replacements at a Workbench using 2 Iron Rods to make 1 Chains. You must have picked up Chains before their Workbench recipe becomes available.

02

Find your first Chains in the prison

  1. Search the smaller chests in the prison area for Chains. A small chest there starts with 3 Chains, giving you a ready-made supply before you can craft replacements.
  2. Take the Chains into your inventory to meet the item prerequisite for their Workbench recipe. Simply gathering Iron Rods does not replace the need to find Chains first.

Keep your next repair in mind before spending the chest's contents. Chains are needed for the prison counterweight Mechanism and the sewer boat Mechanism, separately from the Iron Rods those repairs involve.

03

Craft replacement Chains at the Workbench

  1. Build a Workbench from the Crafting menu if you do not already have one. Its recipe uses 3 Wood Planks, 2 Iron Rods and 1 Leather.
  2. Open the Workbench and select the Chains recipe after you have obtained Chains. This is the station that makes replacements.
  3. Craft Chains using 2 Iron Rods. Each craft produces 1 Chains, so reserve additional rods for any lever or boat repair you still need to finish.

If the recipe is missing, check whether Chains have actually been in your inventory. Their recipe requires you to have held the finished item, making the prison chest the useful starting point before crafting more.

04

Get Iron Rods without spending your repair supply

Look for ready-made Iron Rods while exploring the prison. There are 2 lying in the open, while a small chest holds 2 more alongside a Small Key. Prison and sewer resource spots can also produce Iron Rods, although they can give other items instead.

For a continuing supply, build a Smelter from 5 Clay and 5 Scrap Metal in the Crafting menu. Feed it Scrap Metal and Coal to produce Iron Rods, then use those rods at the Workbench for more Chains.

05

Use Chains on the prison counterweight Mechanism

The prison's broken levers and its chain Mechanism are separate repairs. Repairing a lever with an Iron Rod lets you pull that lever; the counterweight Mechanism still needs Chains before the Big Door can open.

  1. Repair each broken lever labelled “Fix Lever” with 1 Iron Rod so it can be pulled. Of the prison's 3 broken levers, one opens a door and the other two operate Counter Weights.
  2. Bring Chains to the prison Mechanism and complete its repair. Look for the prompt “Bring Chains to Fix it” to identify the outstanding chain requirement.
  3. Pull the counterweight levers to raise both Counter Weights. With the chain Mechanism repaired and both weights raised, the Big Door opens temporarily.

If the levers work but the Big Door stays closed, check the chain repair as well as the Counter Weights. Prepare your route before activating the weights, because the door closes again after a while.

06

Save Chains and an Iron Rod for the sewer boat

  1. Bring 1 Chains and 1 Iron Rod to the broken Mechanism beside the sewer boat. Both materials are required to complete this repair.
  2. Install the repair materials at the boat-side Mechanism. You can supply them together or separately, and the repair consumes both items.
  3. Activate the repaired Mechanism or the Boat to start moving along the water. Either interaction can also stop the boat, and it stops automatically at the end.
