Build the Workbench for tools and equipment

The Workbench is your main crafting station for tools, weapons, armor and Chains; hand crafting covers torches, planks, rope and camp structures. Add a Smelter for Iron Rods, a Cooking Table for food preparation and heated cooking stations for meals.

Unlock the recipe before collecting spare materials

Find your first Hammer, Axe, Chains and Explosive before trying to make replacements: their recipes require you to have held the matching item. The Great Axe requires an Axe first. Building a Workbench gives you somewhere to craft them, but those discovery requirements still matter.

Look on the Workbench for the Pickaxe recipe. Craft the Hook there too, then assemble the Grappling Hook in your inventory from 1 Hook and 1 Rope. Use the finished Grappling Hook to create climbing ropes on ledges.

For the route to your first Axe, follow the Axe and Bean Gem walkthrough.

04

Hand-craft the supplies your route needs

A Torch takes 2 Sticks or 2 Bones, while 1 Log makes 3 Wood Planks. Rope takes 2 Vines and 1 Stick; a Nail takes 1 Iron Rod. Make these in the Crafting menu, saving spare Rods until you know what your next repair needs.

You can also prepare basic meat without a station: 1 Rat makes 1 Raw Meat, and 1 Frog makes 2 Raw Drumsticks. Bat carcasses go to the Cooking Table instead. There, a Bat Carcass becomes 2 Raw Drumsticks and a Red Bat Carcass becomes 3.

05

Build in an order that protects progression materials

  1. Start with a Rotisserie over a Bonfire for roasted food. Reserve your early Leather and Iron Rods for the Workbench and progression repairs before buying into extra equipment.
  2. Keep Iron Rods available for prison lever repairs, and save Chains for mechanisms. The prison Mechanism shows “Bring Chains to Fix it”; the boat Mechanism also needs Chains and an Iron Rod.
  3. Build a Smelter when you need a continuing Iron Rod supply, and feed it Scrap Metal and Coal. Budget those materials around any remaining casts at the large dungeon smelter.
  4. Add the Cooking Table after picking up Leather, then expand your cooking setup around the meals you want. Have an Oven and Coal ready before preparing the final pizza.
06

Choose bags after securing your Workbench

A Backpack costs 1 Leather, 2 Ragged Cloth and 1 Rope, and adds storage while being heavy to carry. A Water Flask takes 2 Vines and 2 Animal Hide. Secure the Workbench materials before spending your early Leather on a Backpack.

Backpacks stay on the player after death, while items that are not kept go into a death pack. Treat the extra storage as a packing decision for your next trip, especially when moving camp.

07

Keep the Cooking Table and Oven for the final pizza

The Cooking Table prepares the pizza, and the Oven finishes it. Combine 1 Wild Corn and 1 Water Bottle into Corn Dough, then combine 1 Corn Dough, 1 Tomato and 1 Cheese into Raw Deep Dish Pizza. Bake that in the Oven with Coal.
